OTTAWA, ON, Sept. 21, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, today issued the following statement to recognize Rail Safety Week 2026 in Canada:

"Railways have been an essential part of Canadian history, and they continue to be a critical part of our country's economy and supply chains.

"Canada's rail network is one of the safest in the world, thanks to strong oversight and collaboration among governments, railways, and others, but there is no denying that train tracks are inherently dangerous places. Tracks are for trains, not for people.

"Every year, too many communities experience heartbreak and sadness when we learn about another tragedy at a railway crossing or along a rail corridor.

"Every one of these tragedies is a reminder of why rail safety must remain a priority.

"Rail Safety Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of these risks and reinforce a simple message: rail safety is a shared responsibility, and we all have a role to play.

"Through initiatives like the Rail Safety Improvement Program, the Government of Canada works with communities and railways across the country to make crossings and rail corridors safer. This includes investments in new technology and infrastructure, as well as education and awareness initiatives that help prevent deaths and injuries involving trains.

"During Rail Safety Week, and every day, let's remember three important things we can all do to stay safe. Keep a safe distance away from tracks, only use designated crossings, and always stay alert and cautious at those crossings.

"Taking a few simple precautions can save a life. Please stay safe around Canada's railways."
